In the digital age, control over color in our photographs gives us a flexibility that could never be achieved in film photography. This unparalleled ability to work with color in new and interesting ways might push us away from the very roots of photography.

In the beginning there was only black and white. The photographer had to learn to think in black and white, to compose using line, shape, and volume, or form. Without the influence (or distraction) of color, compositions relied mostly on the use of light to draw the viewer's attention to the important elements.

Over 6 weeks, we'll learn how to "see" in black & white when composing and capturing our photos, using some interesting tricks. We'll concentrate on light, and how we can use it to create the appropriate contrast for a particular composition.

In the third week, we'll begin working in the classroom, learning how to "develop" our photos, using both Lightroom & Photoshop.

Some of the concepts and techniques we'll discuss:

  • Using color channels in Lightroom's Black & White processing mode to affect contrast and tones
  • Using Lightroom's Split Toning tools to create interesting monochrome effects, introducing color into photos
  • Explore some of Photoshop's options for working in black & white images, including using individual color channels for effect

An Adobe Creative Cloud subscription is required for this course! You must have a solid ability to shoot with your camera in manual mode, and a basic understanding of Lightroom. The Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan costs $10/month to subscribe, and you have full access to both Lightroom and Photoshop.

You will need a camera and associated accessories (charged battery, memory card, etc.) each week, and beginning the third week, through the sixth week, you'll need a computer, with Adobe Creative Cloud installed and activated.

You should have taken the Lightroom I Workshop, and have completed the Beginning Digital Photo Course, as a minimum, OR have enough experience with Lightroom and manual mode to be relatively comfortable.

No Photoshop experience is necessary; we'll introduce you to the concepts required during the course.
